Booking a band to perform at a birthday celebration can be as easy or difficult as you make it! Use a reputable agency who you feel are trust worthy. Dealing with musicians directly can be cheaper but you wont get any contracts or the security that comes with a good entertainment agency. Imagine, if you will, that the band-leader calls you up on the day of your event and tells you that he has to cancel his performance. With an agency it would be there problem to sort you out a replacement at the last minute.

Another good tip is to always listen to a live performance of you chosen band playing at a similar event to the one which are planning. There is no point listening to a fancy studio recording, they can make anyone sound good these days! Even better would be a youtube clip of the band playing at a birthday party. Then you will know exactly what you are paying for.
