Like most things in life, booking live musicians for an event is a matter of common sense! Always listen to recordings of the band playing at a live event (ie. not recorded in a fancy studio!), all musicians worth hiring will offer live audio clips and in most cases video as well. Read what they have to say about the suitability of the artist for their event. Also, look out for bands who have performed for well known companies as well. Other things that you might want to check include public liability insurance: if a speaker falls over and injures someone are you covered? Most performers have public liability coverage supplied by the musicians union. All electronic equipment also needs to be PAT tested to check that it is safe for use in a public area. Be sure to check that your band are covered in this respect as well.

It always worth speaking to someone at your live music venue. If they are located in a residential area then they might have to use a sound limiter which turn off the electricity if the noise levels are too high.
